Adding Oil To Your Dogs Nutrition.?

By admin

I read many of times that adding oil
(flaxseed, extra virgin olive, salmon, coconut, etc)
would help dogs (cats, horses, etc) to maintain their shiny coat & prevent it from shedding too much.
I feed Innova, which already contains flaxseed oil, so would it be bad if I add oil to his nutrition?
I was wondering WHICH oil is your choice and why?
Also HOW MUCH to you add and HOW OFTEN a week?
Thank you guys.

There’s not enough oil in any dog food to make a difference to a dog’s skin and coat, so yes, go ahead and add oil. How much depends on the size of your dog. I’ve got greyhounds (70 pounds) and a Belgian tervuren puppy who’s 53 pounds right now and they get a salmon oil capsule daily. They get salmon oil because the omega 3s are great and if you decide to use it, you’ll definitely see the results real soon.
Olive oil is also great. How much to use depends on the size of your dog – a teaspoon to a tablespoon daily.

Flaxseed is a vegetarian plant based source of Omega 3 fatty acids, but has far less than salmon oil (about 1/20th). Olive oil contains Omega 9 fatty acids which are not beneficial to their coat. Most likely the manufacturing process destroys any benefits of the flaxseed oil contained in dog kibble. Coconut oil is good as an anti- bacterial, but not beneficial to the coat. I think the best source is probably Salmon oil. You can purchase it at petstores and follow the recommended guidelines. You can also by Omega 3 fish oil capsules with the human supplements (buy the kind not marked odorless). I just poke a pin in the capsule and share it between all of my Yorkies (4 pounds) who take turns licking it as I squeeze. If your dog develops loose stools, cut back on the dosage. Sardines are also a very good source, but expensive and the omega fatty acids become unstable after opening so you can’t refrigerate a can and only give a small portion. My Yorkies do like them, but my Malamute won’t touch them so it is a waste of money in my household because a whole can would be too much for my little ones.
When you are reading labels, look for Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 6 fatty acids are easily obtained from many sources and do not need to be supplemented.

I had a Lab growing up and we have her a teaspoon of vegetable oil on her food to keep her coat shiny and keep her dandruff to a minimum. This seemed to help. Have you ever heard of The Missing Link? It’s a supplement that is supposed to help with the skin/coat and various other problems. Innova is a very good food, but your dog might be missing something in his diet.

I don’t give my dogs extra oil as their coats are fine but I give my horse vegetable oil twice a week with her feed to help maintain her coat. You could give the dog this too but you can buy special oils in the pet stores. They are a little more expensive tho.
