Am I Bathing My Dog Too Often? How Often Should I Bathe Him?
ByI have a white toy poodle who is almost 1 and a half years old. I give him a bath every week. I heard you should only bathe them once a month, but if i did that my dog would look TERRIBLE and literally gray (he runs and plays outside a lot). He hasn’t gotten any skin infections or anything yet, and I’ve been doing this for like a year (or a little less). Also if i don’t bathe him once week my family will nag me soooo much and tell me im not taking good care of him.

I have had dogs for over
24 years and have always bathed mine every week. The longest is about 2 weeks.
As long as you use a good quality shampoo that is not harsh to the skin and use a conditioner, your dog will be fine.
Most of my dogs have some white hair or fine hair, and their hair is white, soft and no tangles.
I agree with bathing dogs with white hair more often, or once a week, because with some dog breeds, the white hair will get a yellowish or dull color if you do not keep it healthy and clean. Also, dogs tend to get tear stains under their eyes, and it is always best to keep the hair under the eyes clean because the tears from the eyes stains the hair under the eyes, can cause an odor and even infection if too much dirt and bacteria collect under the eyes.
Keep doing what you are doing with bathing your poodle every week. I have a Yorkie-Poodle mix and 3 Japanese Chins and bathe them every week or at the most 2 weeks and their skin is actually better and their hair is clean, shiny and healthy.
It is important though, to also use a conditioner after shampooing your dog. It loosens any tangles or knots which can happen with Poodle hair. Also it keeps the hair soft and keeps it healthy.
It is much better to keep your dog clean, because dirty hair and skin can attract bugs, parasites and infections.
You are doing the right thing by bathing your dogs every week. If your dog does not get into much dirt or is not outside much, then you could bathe them about every 2 weeks. Either way, it is the best way to keep your dog’s skin and hair clean and free of allergy or skin infections.
Best of luck to your dog. Hope I helped.

Well, you can let your family nag you or you can keep on drying out your dog’s skin and coat. Your choice. Yes, you are bathing him too much because I really doubt you’re conditioning him, he’s not getting salmon oil – in short, he’s not getting any of the skin and coat care that show dogs get – dogs who need to be bathed frequently. If he gets gray from being a dog, brush him!

i bathe my dog once every 2 or 3 wks. of course, you dont want a smelly dog. and bathing too often takes away their natural enzymes of the body to make their coat naturally shiny. it will dry out their skin and cause irriation.

That product works wonders for messy dogs. Any no-water shampoo is good, beacause they won’t wash out the oils.

That is too often. It will dry his skin out. You can try some dry shampoo or dog wipes or even just wet him and massage him. Basically give him a bath without the shampoo.
