The British used Sicily as a base of naval operations during the Napoleonic wars, their presence on the island possibly stopped it suffering the problems Mainland Italy had during this period, i.e it was just a massive battleground with one army or another marching though.

The advantages I guess could be that Napoleon was not able to take control over Sicily, although that would be an advantage for the aristocracy and not the common people. The short term was that Sicily had a British army occupying it and so really had no choice in foreign policy, Sicily was little more than a puppet country during the Napoleonic Era. In the long run though, the king of Sicily was able to reunite his kingdom with Naples, no longer needing to rely on the British.
