Can puppy give hookworm to my other dog?
ByI am getting a Boxer puppy tomorrow. This puppy was treated yesterday for hookworm, there were 8 puppies in the litter and 6 died already from hookworm so there was about a 50/50 chance of him making it. Tomorrow will be 48 hours since he was given treatment and the vet said if he makes it through 48 hours then he will be ok. My concern is I have a 4 year old Maltipoo, so even though the puppy has been given treatment will this be a threat to my other dog? Are there any precautions I should take to keep my other dog safe? Is it a bad idea to bring the puppy into my home so soon? Thanks for any information
Well if it is that contagious to me and my other dog what should I do the next few weeks? Should I keep him in his cage most of the time?

Yes, hooks CAN be transmitted from dog to dog! Most times they need two treatments to rid of all the hooks!
Hopefully your Maltese is (and has been) on either Heartgard or Interceptor year-round. If not, get him on it asap and keep him on it all year round.
You need to pick up your Boxer pup’s bowel movements *immediately* after he defecates each and every time until you have his feces retested in 2 weeks!
ADD: No, you should not keep him in his cage just because he has hooks hun. Instead, just be very aware… meaning.. wash your hands frequently, pick up after he goes each time, and make sure you have his feces retested in 2 weeks.

Roundworms are the most common intestinal parasite in dogs and cats in the world. Animals with roundworms pass the infection to other animals when the worm eggs develop into larvae and are present in the animal’s feces (droppings). Your pet can pick up the infection by eating infected soil, licking contaminated fur or paws, or by drinking contaminated water.
Infected female dogs may pass the infection to their puppies before birth or afterwards when they are nursing. Infected female cats cannot infect their kittens before birth, but can pass on the infection through their milk when kittens are nursing.

he should be fine if he’s being treated, worms are contagious and they can be picked up pretty easy even when your out walking them the heartworm I give my dogs all year because it takes care of other worms & some parasites it is interceptor and to keep you yard safe my Vet told me to get some lime from the gardening store every once in a while I do a light sprinkling helps keep worms & parasites away and is good for the soil

The hook worms are a concern, not only for your other dog, but for you and your family as well. Hookworm larvae can penetrate through the skin, so picking up feces as soon as it is dropped is very important. You will also need to wash your hands after playing with the puppy (you should anyway) and DO NOT let it sleep in the bed with you or your family members.
The puppy will need to be treated again in 2 weeks, but go ahead and start it on heartworm medication too. You will also need to give your dog iron containing vitamins: hookworms s**k blood and your puppy is likely anemic. You also need to find out if the puppy had a transfusion and if it was cross matched prior to that. If it had a blood transfusion and was not cross matched, if your dog ever needs a future transfusion, it could have a deadly reaction if not cross matched at that time. It will be important information to give to your vet.
Good luck with your new puppy.

Yes it can. And to your family as well.
