Here is a paragraph from the dog food project that states why I think all dry food should be wet (aren't I clever). The liver needs water to process protein and as a medium to carry waste products to the kidneys, where they are filtered out and most of the water is reabsorbed. The less concentrated the waste products in this primary filtrate are, the easier it is for the kidneys to do their filtering work - that's why it is unhealthy to feed dry food only and so critical that dogs eating mostly or exclusively dry food and dogs with liver disease get lots of extra water. Dogs who eat mostly canned food or a home prepared diet automatically take in more moisture and do not need to compensate as much by drinking. Contrary to what many people think and pet food companies claim, dogs (and cats) do not know instinctively how much extra water they have to drink to make up for what is lacking in the dry food. I do mix canned food, baked turkey, and broth in with her food, though, so that might be why she eats them. I love blue buffalo dog food. I fed (going back to) blue wilderness.
I wanted to add my dog sometimes ate around them too. He would put them in the floor. I would once a day mix his food with a wet food and he ate every bite.

I think they are "life source bits," that's what the bag says. My dog doesn't like them either. She spits them out and they are all over the floor by the time she's done eating. I think they probably just have extra nutrients in them. I would just leave them in the bowl, and let your dog eat around them if he wants. Mine will eventually eat those pieces of the food once she gets down to the bottom of her bowl, I guess maybe they just don't taste as good. Like Beneful has all those "pieces" that look like carrots or healthy stuff, but they really aren't. They're just shaped and dyed to look like meat and vegetables.
