Does someone know of good websites on very simple puppy training?

By admin

We have a 9 week old sheltie. He’s smart, but we cannot get him into puppy training until April. In the meantime I would like to work with him on very simple commands—like no, come, and fetch. Does anyone know of sites that have ideas on training these simple commands?

Thanks!

Share affection after a dog has… exercised and eaten, changed an unwanted behavior into a behavior you asked for, responded to a rule or command, or entered a calm-submissive state.

Don’t share affection when your dog is… fearful, anxious, possessive, dominant, aggressive, whining, begging, barking, or breaking a household rule.

Don’t forget exercise and discipline. Prove your love by giving your dog what he or she needs: Long walks; Rules, boundaries, and limitations.

Give your dogs as much love as you have! Give as much love as your heart can handle and then some! But please give it at the right time.http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/tips/basics_affection.php

Here is a link for how to teach basic commands. However, just FYI, ‘no’ is not a command and fetch and come are not simple commands. Good luck.

I’m not familiar with websites but you should check out the dog whisperer. I think it’s on the discovery channel. I have a friend that’s a dog trainer and he says this guy is right on the money.

If he’s smart he should be easy to train. If he’s not coming to you he might not be used to the sound of his own name yet. The more you use it when you talk to him the more he’ll know you are acknoledging HIM. When he starts to recognise his name, one call from a few steps away should get him to come to you.

Fetching is simple enough. Buy him a toy, or choose one that he mostly plays with. Whatever it is e.g. bone, keep repeating the word to him when showing him the toy. He’ll get to know what it’s called. I did that with my dog, and if i go outside and say to her “Where’s your burger?” She’ll go off and look for it and bring it back.

I suggest that you go the store and buy this dog clicker, you should be able to find it in any store around the animal section. And with the clicker when you are teaching your dog how to do tricks and commands you say the word like “sit” and push his bottom down then you click the clicker and give him a treat then you do that over and over again the same thing, “sit” push his bottom down, click the clicker then give him a treat and eventually he will learn the trick! I’m not sure of any websites but I’ve learned a lot about dogs and what to do, at one point I had a Sheltie puppy and he was pretty easy to train with those pointers I told you about. Okay I hope this all works out for you and your puppy! If you need anymore advice just ask!
