How Do I Get This Dog To Smell Better???

By admin

I took in a stray dog on New Years Eve. He was filth and extremely itchy. We bathed him which made him smell a little better but he was still really itchy. I took him to the vet Jan 2nd, and they tested for mange, it was negative. They also gave us antibiotic in case he had a bacterial skin infection and a fatty oil pill to help his dry skin. It seemed to help at first, but now he is very itchy again and stinks like stale fritos because he constantly itches and licks himself. We tried to give him another bath but it just made him itchier. We’ve used, oatmeal shampoo, baby shampoo, and puppy shampoo. What can we do to make this stinky dog smell better?!?! He is probably 7 or 8 years old and is a border collie lab mix. http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x178/…

Wow, he’s a good looking dog!
He may have food allergies. You may need to get some more testing done. There are dogs that need to be on special food that is lamb/rice, fish, or even vegetarian blends because of whatever they are allergic to. Special dog foods can do wonders if you are willing to pay the money to do the skin testing. Ask your vet to recommend a dermatologist, or just switch his food. If he was a stray he might have been picking through garbage scraps like beef or chicken, and now has a skin reaction. I’d try a lamb/rice mix. If his skin is dry, constant bathing may make it worse. I’d stick to oatmeal shampoos though, and not human ones.

I would redirect this question back to the veterinarian who treated your dog, he may wish to extend the antibiotics (provided he has finished his intial dose), he may also recommend a special veterinary shampoo to use and if he/she does I would recommend that you let a professional groomer groom him with it to be sure that all of the soap is removed properly. I would also ask your veterinarian if he could be allergic to the food you are feeding him, this too could be another cause. If the problem isn’t resolved, I would ask your veterinarian if he/she can recommend a good Veterinary Dermatologist. Good luck to you and your new dog and God Bless you for taking him in.

well take him back to the vet and see if there is anything else that could ve wrong with his skin. also, ask the vet if there is any kind of certain medical shampoo or something that could help. when in doubt, it never hurts to go to the vet!!

he’s so cute . I wish their were more people in the world like u who would help other animals in need. Im not sur wat is wrong with him but maybe he has fleas or dandruffs. Idk lice or maybe ticks. Also he could have poison ivy or poison oak cause if he was a stray u dont have any clue where hes been. But its really nice that ure taking care of him. I hope u dont give up and u keep him. i think u should take him to another vet and get another opinion. Wait awhile and see wat up maybe its a habit of his.

if you are looking for a temporary fix you can rub a dryer sheet on him. or you can try to take him in to get his haircut at petsmart or something. that could help

it could be fleas… and there are special foods for dogs that have fish oil in them to get a nicer coat. Good luck!

the dogs may have a food allergy as well. Try a dog food without any wheat or corn. Wellness has a good dog food with simple ingredients that target dogs who have allergies to some ingredience in big brand name dog food reciepes. If it is a food allergy you’ll notice his dry skin will go away and he will stop itching. Checkout the Wellness website and read the testimonals, there are many people out there who have described what you just did and wellnesses food helped them.

Your vet should have some special shampoo to help with the skin proble. He may have severe allergies, either to the environment or food, so allergy medicine or a change to a high quality food may help. Food and supplement changes can take months to work, so give it time.
