How long are the stages of labor for a Shih-Tzu?

By admin

I need to know how long the stages of labor are for a Shih-Tzu? What can I expect? I guess I’m a little scared to be helping her with her delivery.

You need to get some good books on whelping, and find an experienced breeder to help you in person. And consult with your vet.

If you’re scared, have someone experienced there to help you. Like your mentor that you met when taking your female to the dog shows to get her the champion title. Thank goodness you paid for all her health tests to be done and only let a quality stud breed with her. Thank goodness you have money set aside for a possible C-section. And thank you so much for getting her all her prenatal check ups, like a good responsible breeder!

For goodness sake, do some research before your female whelps.

You can have your dog aborted and spayed. Anyone who has to ask questions, here, has NO business breeding.

Why not talk to your breed mentor?

Of course your dog has her breed championship as well as all health and genetic testing done?

You do, of course, have upwards of $2000.00, should your dog need an emergency c-section due to pregnancy/whelping complications.

First of all, get in contact with a vet. Labor is going to be different for every dog (the stages of labor for a Shih Tzu don’t differ from that of a Great Dane), but small breeds do tend to have more difficulties that may require emergency medical attention such as a c-section. So you need to not only talk to your vet about what to expect, but also make sure you have a well established relationship with them in case you need to call at 2 in the morning when your b*tch has been in labor for two hours and hasn’t produced a pup.

While I agree this isn’t the most reliable place to get answers for your question, at least you’re trying! Please email me at shihtzufanatic@yahoo.com and I’d be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

wow you should have done this research BEFORE you bred your dog.

Call a vet.. or better yet, get her spayed and abort this litter instead of risking her life.
