I love the idea of having an Alaskan Malamute as a dog. What should I expect from this animal?
ByThere big. There loving. They must eat a ton of food. Do they require a lot of land? Are they suseptible to medical problems? How are they around kids? Thanks!

They are very high energy dogs that take an owner willing to spend lots of time in structured exercise with it (not just putting it out in the yard) and time to properly obedience train. They are escape artists, so a good fence is a must and they should not be left to their own devices for hours on end because they have a flair for mischief.

You should probably stay at home for most part of the day and walk it. (Thats because they need a lot of exercise.) If you want to learn everything about them here are some helpful links:

Mals can be great dogs with kids although they ARE large so they can bowl kids over.
They have weird metabolism so they don’t eat as much as you think. About the same as a Lab.
They do need lots of exercise but nothing major, but they are working dogs so a “job” is a must.
They can and will escape and destroy stuff if they are bored.
They are very prey driven, so they can dangerous around cats and rabbits, etc.
Their coats are weird and they molt or “blow” their coat twice a year. That can be icky but other than that they are easy to maintain.
But they are awesome dogs! I’ve had 3 and adored every minute…they talk but don’t bark. They “snuggle” and love people.
