You could visit http://us.iams.com/iams/en_US/jsp/IAMS_Page.jsp?pageID=DBG
You just click a breed of dog, and they tell you everything about it. This is what I went to when I was looking for a dog. Hope this helps.

well
dogs are way better than cats
most cats don’t learn to listen to their owners and they
aren’t exactly fun.
to find a breed go to the shops and look for
one
try not to get a big dog.
the best is to find a dog around 6 weeks
and start training it
that way they won’t mess up the house!

I know you said you already checked your local animal shelters, but since your mom says she’s still not quite ready, I recommend that you keep checking out animal shelters. My local humane society has new dogs brought in every day, far too many for them to house.
The dog you get at a shelter will be cheaper than buying a pure breed from a dealer, and it will be doing a great kindness to a poor dog who would otherwise be stuck in a shelter indefinitely. I also maintain that mutts generally do better healthwise than many purebreds.
Please just keep checking the shelters until you find the perfect dog for you!

Mutts are not nessicarily better than pure breeds, I hate people who say that as much as I hate people who say pure breed are better. I would go with a Mastiff, they are laid back and sweet but protective and fear inspiring. I have a Presa Canario Mastiff and a 9 week old Mastiff/st Bernard mix. They are SO sweet, and easy to care for, and at the same time…..aint noboady in their right mind breaking in…even if just for the fear of being licked to death. Go to http://www.petfinder.com it is a HUGE site of all national shelters even in your area…..you can save a life, and save money by adopting a dog or puppy from a shelter who needs a home, and most times they have all shots and are ready to go. And mastiffs are actually recommended for apt life because they are very laid back and dont need a lot of attention or excersize like many other larger breeds like huskys, labs, ect ect. My guy you wouldnt even know was in the house most of the time

well u should get a medium breed. I have a jack Russell but their really hyper and I don’t think you want to walk one twice a day, but they came with three different fur type short, long, and broken broken i like best but it sheds.
There’s mixed breeds, oh if your aloud u could get a snake they don’t shed. I think theres a breed call a miniature dovermen.
srry i can’t think of any thing else right now but i hope i help a bit:) oh srry about your dog.

Go with a short-haired miniature daschaund. They are pretty small when they are full grown so they should fit in an apartment really well. They are basically the size of a cat so your dad should like them. Here’s a couple pictures of mine. The pics are from around summertime and they were full-grown.

If you still want a dog try a sheltie they are easy to train and are small enough for an apartment while not being so small you can’t play hard with them. hope this helps.

Get a Greyhound rescue.
1. Give it a 30 minute walk each day and then it spends the rest of the time lounging at your feet or looking for a sunny spot to nap in. Seriously–as big as Greyhounds are, they have less of a “footprint” (ie: physical space demands) than most smaller dogs.
2. It is short-haired.
3. Very docile and not a barker. Well adapted for apartment life. Comes crate-trained and socialized to humans (from the track experiences).
4. It’s a rescue–you’re giving a dog a home and love. What’s not to like about that?

retired racing greyhounds and great danes are EXCELLENT apartment canidates. They may be large, but they are happy being around they’re people and will do will on just a few walks a day, maybe a short romp at the dog park. also, keep an eye on http://www.petfinder.com for rescue dogs throughout the city

Dude sorry ’bout the dog. =( If you are active and want a great companion a siberian husky would be great. But they tend to get a little big. During the summer they shed. But I have one their great!!! They can be stuborn, but if you play chase with them they’ll obey you. They don’t bark, their just wine a lot, and loud. WARNING: Will attack if they feel you are mean to them. Also, you have to walk them for a little while everyday.
