My dog sounds like he is trying to clear his throat but looks like he is gonna vomit, what is it?

By admin

He is a 2yr old boxer and he had his kennel cough vaccine about a month ago, so I dont think its that. He seems to be acting ok, but that cough sound is scary. I think we are gonna bring him to vet tomorrow, but what could it be?
He also threw up about 4 or 5 days ago.
It started about 24 hrs ago.

Kennel cough.
Very common even if dog vaccinated. It does sound very bad. Scare me to death! But ultimately dog recover.
Our dog was vaccinated for it and he still caught it.

These video show what it sound like

A retching sort of cough could be a lot of things, so it’s good that you are bringing him in to the vet. No use in scaring you with all the possibilities,

The other thing to worry about though is bloat. If he starts drooling, retching more, pacing, can’t find a comfortable position to lay down, etc., I’d be on the way to the emergency vet.

ETA: If it began 24 hours ago, it’s not bloat, so that’s good news.

sounds to me like he has someting stuck in there…do you give him those chewy things for dogs( like rawhides?)
I don’t give those to my dogs for that reason…..

Although he has had his Bordetella Vac. much like the flu shot it does not protect against all strains of the virus. He may very well have Kennel Cough. If this has been for a while some times it can turn to pneumonia. Don’t let the word scare you I had adopted a pup who had this. Very treatable. It may help if he gets worse at night if you bring him into the bathroom and run the shower filling it with steam. as he coughs pat his sides by his ribs. Firmly but not slapping him. This will help loosen the mucus. Like ppl when you cough really hard it can make your gag reflex take action(eg. his vomit) Good luck and I hope this helped. I’m sure he will be fine…..LOVE FOR BOXERS!xoxo

It could be a digestive issue such as a blockage or something else. I think you are wise to seek out the vet tomorrow. If he gets worse in the middle of the nite, I’d go to the ER vet.

sometimes, a dog that looks like he is coughing but then finishes up acting like he is going to vomit is usually something called a reverse sneeze and it just means the dog is clearing its throat. it can happen when the dog gets irritated and is usually in the nose and trachea (no problem with the lungs). you should make sure you dont clean your house with strong liquids because they are very irritating to dogs (they can smell up to 1000x more than us). you should still take him to the vet to make sure it is not something more serious.

as far as the vomiting, some dogs with food allergies will throw up every now and then and sometimes have soft stool. if this happens to your dog, try switching food to lamb and rice so that the food only contains two ingredients which can minimize allergies (doesnt matter what brand you choose). you can also talk to your vet, he might recommend z/d prescription diet from Hills but it will be more expensive and is only available through vets

My dog does that all the time, but then she’s a Terrier, and that’s one of the things Terriers do. It’s entirely possible that the dog is just clearing his throat, but you’d better take him to the vet just in case.
