My dad just got a 2yr old maltese/poodle mix today. I have never had a dog before so I’m a bit clueless about taking care of dogs. When she came home she seemed normal and quite happy. I then decided to take her for a little walk. About three minutes later, she suddenly stopped and started to make this weird noise as if she had something stuck up her nose or if she wanted to cough up a hair ball and for a second I thought she wanted to vomit. It lasted for about 15 sec and then she stopped. She started walking a little more and then it happened again. I got scared so I decided to turn around and come back home. She hasn’t done it again and doesn’t seem sick. Now, I don’t know if this is normal or if maybe she has some kind of dog-flu, allergy, or even asthma. Please let me know what you think. Thanks

Was the sound like a honking type sound? Our shihtzu does that and the vet said she gets her ‘flapper’ stuck, nothing can really be done for that, it’s just something that happens periodically, especially to dogs that have a shorter snout. Your maltese/poodle doens’t really fit the short snout category, but the maltese does have somewhat of a shorter snout than other dogs.

You have the collar on too tiight, for God’s sake don’t walk a dog with just a collar, use a harness as not to pull on the throat of the dog and collapse the trachea.

It would be an excellent idea, to register your new dog with a vet, to have a complete health check. And get all her shots, wormers, and flea control medicines.

She could have Asthma, but get her a harness, so that you’ll know if it’s that or if it was from the collar. If you have a harness on her, then you won’t choke her if you pull on it any.
