My chihuahua gave birth roughly 6 days ago to five puppies. I know that diarrhea is common for a few days afterwards, due to their consumption of the placentas, but, in your experiences, does it last for 6 days? It has been getting better and worse by turns, some days it is a bit more solid, and others, it is extremely watery. I have been giving her supplements (by Pet-Tabs) to help her health and milk production. Do you think this has caused her diarrhea to continue? (Her diarrhea started before I began giving her supplements.) Any information on your personal experience would be extremely helpful!
Another question that I have: I have been cautious to the point of paranoid about my dog’s health, and have been checking her teats daily for signs of inflammation and infection. Recently, her teats have seem rather heated, but she is not showing any other signs of mastitis or similar infections. She is not lethargic, has been nursing wonderfully, there is no discharge, and her puppies are gaining an average of 1oz a day, as well as having nicely rounded tummies and plenty of energy. Am I worrying for nothing?
Before I end, I just wanted to say: I have already spoken with my veterinarian about all of these concerns, and he has said to “give it a few days and see.” She went in for a check-up a week before her delivery and also on the day right after her delivery, and my vet never mentioned any problems. I am more interested in your PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with these matters, as I don’t want to risk the health of my dog. I’m not interested in “waiting and seeing,” if this does end up being a more serious issue. I want to be prepared, for both my dog and her pups. This is my first experience with newborn puppies, and I would like to learn from your personal experiences, and not from people who have no idea what they are talking about, merely commenting to say things like “Call your vet!!!!! *&#&@(!* ” and “you are a backyard breeder *&*!@(#*$ ” I am a responsible pet owner who is trying to gather all the information she can so that she can be fully prepared for whatever issues arise.
Thank you for your time!

Hello, I have a 4 year old miniature pinscher. Today, she threw up 3x a yellow foaming liquid, and her stools are kind of bloody drops..it is a bright red mix with brown. She hasn’t been eating anything besides some cheese. It might be because of a new dog food from Purina to Pedigree. It is hot over here if that is a factor. Pretty cool in the house. She seems alert for the most part and pretty much normal. In the morning her stool was normal but there was a red spot (think it was blood now) that I didn’t take into account. The past two times she pooped, it hasn’t been much or regular shape. It is like bloody small circular blobs (maybe diarrhea). I am about to make some rice. If you need any more details, please let me know. Also my dog can still jump and bark.
PS: I am not sure if she is stress because I moved her from my father’s house to my grandma’s house. She went from living from a Suburb to Chicago. There was more opportunities to look outside from my father’s house than my grandmother’s house.

I just adopted a dog from an animal rescue about a week ago. He is about one year old, and HUGE. They told us pure black lab, but there is no way. I think he is black lab and great dane (he has the dane face and head). When we got him, he was underfed and very thin. He weighs around 85 pounds right now and could easily stand to gain another 15 at the least. Someone told me he will probably get bigger. I am a little worried because after I take him for a 45 minute walk, he pants very hard and his breathing is very deep. I know that great danes especially do not live long, and labs live around 10-12 years. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the expectancy would be for this mix, and if anyone has had one, what are some health issues I need to watch out for?

I’ve had 3 fine dogs but when my last one died practically in my arms from cancer I decided to wait to get another. Now I find that my condition, fibromyalgia, limits me at times. A new home with little place for a dog to go outside, plus a busy street to traverse for a block-and-a-half before reaching a good neighborhood to walk inhibits me from getting the dog I want. My dogs have been medium-sized with the last being an Australian shepherd. I’d like to get another, but realize that another breed might be best. I don’t like little yippy dogs. Thank you for your advice.
