I was told by my doctor and therapist I need to get an animal. I suffer from a variety of health issues which don’t make me unable to care for an animal,I just don’t take care of myself like I should. Since I’ve owned puppies/dogs in the past,I chose to get one. I’d rather rescue because I don’t want to have to go through the early puppy stages(I just don’t think I could handle that right now, puppies are a lot of work). I’m looking for the later puppy stage to early adulthood(one with a lot of energy, just not as much as a young puppy and one that will listen a little better).
I was thinking of a bigger breed,I really love the Alaskan Malamute, but I know I can’t handle a rambunctious dog like that. But I’m looking for something around that size. Would be satisfied with routine 30 minute walks(three or four a day),could be trusted off leash at a dog park(one’s nearby),would do well in a townhouse(what I live in by myself which has an okay sized backyard for quick bathroom breaks),I work from home so I’ll be home most of the time, can be independent(play by his/herself and/or nap) while I’m working but will happily play with me,I have the money to care for a dog. I’m not looking for a guard dog,I would like for him/her to bark to alert me but that’s about it since I live alone.
What breed do you suggest? Link to a rescue and/or adoption?
Thanks.

My partner has a rather large dog. <100 lbs English Mastiff. The dog sheds all the time and drools everywhere. I actually like animals, but my problems is I am very allergic to them, I also have moderately severe asthma. I wanted to try being around the dog and seeing if I could tolerate it. I've taken the maximum amount of antihistamine. At first it was alright, but as the allergy load in my body grew I couldn't handle it anymore. I began to break out with skin rashes and then had breathing problems as well.
My partner and I want to get married. I am now also 10 weeks pregnant. My allergies are even worse as a result of it. My partner says he won't give up the dog till we are married. In the meantime I have to be exposed to it in his car and anytime I go to visit him. Anytime I mention how difficult it is for my allergies – he piles the guilt trip on me. He makes it seem like I'm some animal hating nazi and assures me trying to have him give up the dog is paramount to putting it down because "she's too old for anyone to want now". On top of that, he won't even admit my allergies are from the dog. He blames it on the dust in the house or the mould in the car and not at all from the dog dander which is a known allergy for years and years. I've had allergies since I'm 6 months old and have been hospitalized for my asthma and allergies several times in the past.
He also tells me giving up the dog is going to cause problems with his mother because _she_ likes the dog so much.
There is a 25-50% chance my child will have allergies as severe as mine. How can I convince my partner that giving up the dog without putting the guilt trip on me is the best thing? I am under so much stress from being unexpectedly pregnant and suffering from such bad allergies I cannot handle this anymore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Do I get him to speak to my allergist? Do I have my parents speak to him? What can I do to convince him my allergies are real and that he needs to take action without a guilt trip?

I and my boyfriend rescued one last night, and she’s in pretty bad shape. A lady near us with a hedgehog hospital took her in last night, but said she probably won’t last the night. I’m waiting another two hours before i ring to see since it’s kinda early, but if she has survived, she’s offered me Luna (the hedgehog) back to keep if she can’t be returned to the wild, as an alternative to being put down. I know she would never be a pet I could ‘play with’ and I’m not looking for that – if I wanted that, I’d go get another rat, bird or dog. I don’t have a clue how to care for them though and even if Luna doesn’t survive, I’d like to offer a home to one anyway. Any sites which could give me info on keeping a Hedgehog as a domestic pet, or tips on keeping her habitat as natural as possible, would be great.

If you have mild food allergies wouldn’t cutting them out completely put you at risk for a more severe reaction from accidental contact? I’m allergic, but only mildly, to corn, wheat, peanuts, and almonds. Seriously, I had no clue I was allergic until I got allergy testing for my asthma and was given a skin prick test to determine my allergies (I’m allergic to trees, grasses, molds, dust, cats, dogs, pollen, smoke, etc…) and those foods I mentioned, but the allergist at the time (this was back in high school so like maybe 1999/2000) did actually say they were “mild” allergies. But he did say to not eat them. Well I kept eating them because in high school I was a brat and felt like there’d be nothing left but veggies, fruits, dairy, and meat to eat, so I just ignored the advice and kept on eating peanut butter and jelly on wheat sandwiches, etc… The thing is I’m wondering if I should give up any or all of those foods now. I have a doctors appointment in 2 weeks with a new doctor and I’m going to ask her but does anyone have personal experience with a mild food allergy? I don’t puff up or have my tongue swell, my blood pressure doesn’t drop. It’s just a mild reaction I’m unaware of. Just looking for input before I get to the doctor. Thanks. :)

My family has a dog right now, and she is 10 years old. Since she is getting so old, she has arthritis in her legs and joints, so she can’t get around like she used to. Since I usually just come home and watch TV and hunt of the weekends, I think getting a new puppy for me to train to hunt would be good. I am 16 so clearly I have the transportation and responsibility part covered. I would pay for all vet visits, food, and everything. My dad works for Pet safe so all the toys and stuff are free for our family. So its really a matter of them letting me have it. The way I see it, is that I so a whole lot of work and this is just a little thing that I am asking. Any ideas on how I could try to convince my parents to let me get a beagle pup.

I’ve heard that it’s crucial that when you have a dog, you don’t change it’s food, that you always give it the same brand and type. My mom has been buying all different kinds of dog food for our dogs. So far they’ve had about 4 different kinds in the past 2 or 3 months. Will this make them sick? How bad is this exactly. Given, this is the first time we’ve really had dogs. One belongs to us and the other we’re taking care of for a friend. They both seem fine. The one we’re taking care of for a friend is about 5 and he just likes to sit around and be old. But our puppy is very playful, she doesn’t seem sick at all. She has a LITTLE diarrhea, I THINK. It’s almost nothing, completely normal. But I want to know why you can’t keep changing the dog’s food. I think my mom is trying to find something they like that’s in our budget. I just want to keep getting the $2 bags of Everpet. But what should I tell my mom? And please, don’t talk about how dumb my family is and all that crap. I’m really tired of smart allicks telling me that I’m dumb because I have a genuine question and need an honest answer. We have the means to take care of these dogs, my mom’s just kinda new to them. But I really just want to know what’s so crucial about keeping your dog on the same food?

I am getting a toy chihuahua today and it is about 6 – 7 inches long tops about 7 weeks old and its mother is coming to live with him so dont worry about it being taken away too early or whatever.. There is a person moving in and they are giving me one of the mom chihuahuas baby and the dad is there too… all the family will be there of the chihuahua there will be one sister a brother a mom and dad chihuahuas, yet it will sleep in my room. she told me that the vet said it was handicapped because the molera on its head will never close yet the other siblings moleras did…. hole/softspot on the very top of his head about the size of a dime that wont ever close. My question is how careful must i be with this dog? because im worried that i will get it and i have to be super gentile to him. How hard of a hit to the head would it take to kill it? just curious <—- answer this also please…. i am worried that i will get the dog and hit it by accident barely and it will have a seizure and just fall over and die… how much of a blow to that spot would it take to kill it?

My daughter moved last year to be with her Marine fiance’in NC. Nola was my daughter’s min pin. She was 18 mo’s old. They adopted her 9 months ago from a bad home situation and immediately got her vaccinated, etc. She had a fantastic home with two loving pet owners and Jibby a beautiful Golden Retreiver. Sunday night she didn’t really eat. Monday she began vomiting and had constant bloody diarrhea. They brought her to the emergency vet that night, Tuesday, doing worse they brought her to a vets office and she underwent many tests and recieved IV fluids, antibiotics, anti nausea, etc. They had no diagnosis. Wednesday she was hand fed water and mushy food through a syringe by my daughter. Very little diarrhea, no vomiting. She was very wobbly towards the night and bumping into things. Thursday, back at the vets-very listless and glassy eyed. On the way she has a seizure. More fluids and antbiotics shots. They actually said they gave her double fluids since they don’t keep animals overnight. My daughter, frustrated said this has to be parvo. They said no her white blood count was 11,000-and it would have been lower with parvo. They think it’s pancreatitis(sp) They send her home with instructions for more pedialite and mushy food each 30 mins. After two more seizures late thursday evening (tonight) they rush her back to the all night emergency vet, but she is in a coma on arrival and her heart stops. $1200 and four days later a healthy, robust pup, gone. My daughter sat with her the last few nights on the bathroom floor comforting her. She took 2 days off of work and did everything she could. Her fiance took time off work as well. She even made her a natural parvo/gastrointestinal tea from pedialite, mint and chamomile tea and other mild natural ingrediants that so many sites recommended. The vet never tested for parvo. Said it wasn’t his office’s policy. We still don’t know what killed her–we do know her heart gave out. What are we missing here? What are we overlooking? Why didn’t this vet arrive at the real diagnosis? What to do? There is another pet at home–their retreiver is almost 3yrs old and up to date on vaccinations-but if parvo or another contagious virus-what if…. this is so heartbreaking.
