I Was Told I Need To Get An Animal…i Would Like To Rescue, where Do I Start?
Posted by: | CommentsI was told by my doctor and therapist I need to get an animal. I suffer from a variety of health issues which don’t make me unable to care for an animal,I just don’t take care of myself like I should. Since I’ve owned puppies/dogs in the past,I chose to get one. I’d rather rescue because I don’t want to have to go through the early puppy stages(I just don’t think I could handle that right now, puppies are a lot of work). I’m looking for the later puppy stage to early adulthood(one with a lot of energy, just not as much as a young puppy and one that will listen a little better).
I was thinking of a bigger breed,I really love the Alaskan Malamute, but I know I can’t handle a rambunctious dog like that. But I’m looking for something around that size. Would be satisfied with routine 30 minute walks(three or four a day),could be trusted off leash at a dog park(one’s nearby),would do well in a townhouse(what I live in by myself which has an okay sized backyard for quick bathroom breaks),I work from home so I’ll be home most of the time, can be independent(play by his/herself and/or nap) while I’m working but will happily play with me,I have the money to care for a dog. I’m not looking for a guard dog,I would like for him/her to bark to alert me but that’s about it since I live alone.
What breed do you suggest? Link to a rescue and/or adoption?
Thanks.
Has anyone had a dog that developed Cushing’s syndrome? (an overproduction of some body steroids). If you treated, did it prolong your dogs life or improve the quality of their life? My 14 year old female chi put on 3 pounds in 4 months, going from 10 1/2 to 14. Most of it is water as she drinks nearly a 1/2 gallon a day suddenly and pees hourly. (She is in diapers because we both work.)
She also is nearly blind from cataracts and almost deaf (which has been a blessing actually because she was SO afraid of storms, but hardly ever hears them now), has arthritis… well, she’s 14. So now I have to make a decision whether to treat for Cushing’s or euthanize. If the tumor causing Cushing’s is adrenal (on the kidney) that means surgery, and that we won’t do. If it’s on the pituitary, that requires basically chemotherapy for the rest of her life (pills at home and frequent blood tests to check levels). I’m sure it is quite expensive to treat, but we can afford to do it. But I can’t see putting her through the torture and side effects of chemo if it is not going to greatly improve her quality of life. She Hates pills, needs a nerve pill to go to the vet, and I can’t imagine blood draws every couple months…
Please let me know if you have gone through this with a dog. If you treated with chemo, how bad was it? If you chose euthanasia, how did you come to that decision? (based on dogs age, other health issues they also had, too expensive, etc.
Why Would A Dog Pant If Not Hot Or In Pain?
Posted by: | CommentsHe’s a 17 month old lab and he had diarrhoea this morning but has otherwise been as normal – running and playing. since his evening walk he has been panting on and off. I pressed his tummy gently to see if he was in pain but he just rolled over for more. He is wagging his tail but does not want to play, has sighed a few times and just sits up and pants and does not seem quite right. He’s normally asleep now – its 10 pm. My husband thinks I’m worrying about nothing but I’m not sure.

Where would be a good place to sell my used dog grooming tools?
Posted by: | CommentsA poll, plus: would these pups be weird?
Posted by: | CommentsMy older dog is a male mutt, Cairn + Jack Russell terrier + some others. The younger one is a female Dachshund. My vet says the dachshund is a very good specimen, so when she’s older, he says, getting her mated with a good stud will result in some good things for dachshund lovers, so to speak.
My first question is sort of a poll: if you are (or were to be) a guy, and you have a male dog you “identify” with on some levels (not to mention love a *lot*), would you feel uncomfortable bringing in a random stud to mate with your younger, female dog? (I’m talking about transposed jealousy. I feel very uncomfortable with it, and I’m not going to have it done.)
Second question: if these two had pups, they would be 50% dachshund, 30% Jack Russell, 15% Cairn terrier, and 15% other. Would they be totally weird? I have no clue. If they’re going to be weird (misshapen, bad bones, odd-looking, or whatever), I’ll get the female spayed.
Thanks so very much!

Would you adopt a Puppy Mill dog?
Posted by: | CommentsThere was a puppy mill busted in North Carolina a few days ago, they now have almost 300 dogs in custody. The story really hurt my heart, and i’m thinking about adopting one in a couple months when they go up for adoption. I know that they can possible need a lot of medical attention in the coming years, But what do you think about their mental state, being raised the first part of their lives in a mill? Would you adopt a puppy mill rescue?
