ALL Nsaids have risks…
You can give glucosamine/chondroitin (I get best price at Sam’s Club)
and Ester-C which help with joint health.
That helped my girl enough for about 2 years, but now she needs more and so is also on Novox, a generic form of Rimadyl. I worried over the stories I’d read, but after long researching of it online, I decided to take the risk of using this drug. She’s had no ill effects from it, and I keep a close eye on her and have printed up information on the signs of bad side-effects from this drug.
You can go to a Yahoo group below for advice and many of the members are really knowledgeable and work in the vet industry. -!-

Rimadyl is a great drug to give your dog for existing pain due to arthritis.
Currently, we are treating our basset hound for early onset arthritis and we use hip action treats. You can get them at any Pet People store and they aren’t too expensive (like $15). They have glucosamine in them which helps slow the progression of arthritis within the joint.

Glyco-Flex III daily and Deramaxx as needed for pain.
Glyco-Flex is a supplement and Deramaxx is a prescription NSAID.
Yes, it’s working, but we are in the very early stages of arthritis. The Glyco-Flex helps to slow down the rate of progression of the arthritis and gives some anti-inflammatory relief.

Your vet has taken into consideration, your dogs health history, before making a decision to prescribe her current medication. However, if you are not happy with the medicine, you ought to take her back, and point out to the vet how it is affecting your dog.

One of my Dobermanns has degenerative joint disease & arthritis. To protect the joint & slow down the deterioration, she has Cartrophen injection every six months & Seraquin tablets daily.
At the moment she is completely pain free with excellent mobility, so I will be continuing with the treatment.

I just give him Metacam now. Labs have more trouble with the other available remedies.
Rimadyl has side effects in a Labs liver ? I don’t know why Labs are different but, that’s what my vet said about long term use in a Lab.
