If you need a cheaper dog, I get the message that you can't afford a dog. If it gets really sick and you have to pay $900 for surgery, can you afford it? If you have asthma, i would prefer to get a hypoallergenic dog, because most dogs with short hair shed a lot and can bother your asthma. I will suggest a few breeds to you, but you have to spend a lot of time researching how to take care of a dog and you have to know the breed very well before getting one.
Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso and Poodle.
The Shih Tzu, i have one, so i know, but they are very quiet, they are really smart as well, mine isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but his cuteness makes up for it. They are a little bit difficult to house train, that is the only flaw with them, you just have to be really consistent, or you can adopt one who is already house trained.
The Lhasa Apso are very cute, just a bit smaller than the SHih Tzu, and they are very smart and obvservant. They remember people really well, and they are just a joy to have.
Poodles, I'm not very familiar with the breed, but I hear they are really smart. So look up these breeds and do some research.
You should also watch the Dog Whisperer, good show, you can learn A LOT!
good luck, i hope every thing goes well :)

Look here for local shelters in your area, and see what they have...http://petfinder.com
Cost will be under $300.

A toy poodle is great because they don't shed. You just have to get them groomed when their fur gets too long. Don't know if you can get one for less than $300 though. Good luck!

Try going on www.petfinder.com
You could adopt a dog well under 300 dollars. If you were to go to a reputable breeder, you would have to pay at least 800 dollars. So, opt to adopt!
You could try a cavalier king charles spaniel, maltese, shih tzu, or even a mix of a small dog.
Hope this helps and Good Luck!

Go to a shelter and bring home an adult (Fully Trained) small dog. That would fit all your criteria.
1. Cheap. 2. You can find one short haired. 3. You'll see the size when it's grown, because it is grown. 4. You can find one that's cute. 5. It's already trained.
