I just saw a question from someone asking if they should switch from Eukanuba to another brand and almost everyone said to change, because Eukanuba isn’t good. What’s wrong with it? (I inherited my Dalmation when he was 7 and this is what he was being fed, so I haven’t changed it.. ) If you think another brand is better, please advise, and explain why. I want my dog to be getting good nutrition.. The vet never recommended anything different.

I have not read a Eukanuba label lately to speak specifically to that brand but as general rule….
Grocery store dog food is rarely good. There are a couple OK one’s. Purina One is one but in general Purina foods are garbage fillers.
Two of the first three ingredients should be meat (i.e. meat meal not “by product”)
The grain content should not be “ground yellow corn” that is the non-digestible garbage filler they throw in to make it cheap. It’s all the mess that you end up cleaning up in your yard. Look for brown rice or corn glutten.
There are preservatives that are not good either, know carcinogens the good one starts topo….something.
You can put a multi-vitamin in shoe leather and call “nutritionally complete”http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/
The pet food industry is coming around and there are much better choices now a days. I have found several terrific web sites just searching “dog nutrition.” We almost lost our greyhound to an auto immune disease last winter and I did a ton of research and learned so much. I have always used “Nutro” They have very good food.

Eukanuba is full of grains, which dogs don’t necessarily need. Some dogs don’t do well on grain-free food. It also contains by-products and other sub-quality ingredients.
Here’s a website with reviews of Eukanuba foods. I chose a “six-star” food from this site, Innova EVO, for my dog and she’s got the shiniest coat and her stools aren’t quite as gross.http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_…

Eukanuba like all other commerical foods use cheap ingredients, deadly preservatives, awful fillers and bascially garbage. All commerical foods are owned by huge companies that make other products, but dog food is a cheap way to make billions, the cheaper and poor ingredients they use the more money they make. The Holistc Blends like Wellness, Innova, Canidae, are a 110 times better for you dog. If you go the website The Dog Food Project it will teach you how to read the ingredients and what they all mean.
I use Wellness Core which is 100% Grain Free, NO preservatives and it uses 5 different USDA grade meats. Dog do not need grains they have a hard time digesting them and breaking them down. It takes a toll on them in the long run. Especially stuff like yellow corn, corn, peanut hulls etc.

I use to feed the canned puppy to my shih tzus years back, but after PG bought the company, everything changed. It really isn’t as high of quality as it use to be 15 years ago.

Here are some of the ingredients in Eukanuba that I really don’t like to see in my dog food:
- Chicken By-Product Meal (dried random chicken parts)
- Corn Meal (filler)
- Fish Meal (mystery fish)
- Brewers Rice (cheap grain)
- Dried Beet Pulp (filler)

My parents switched to Purina 1 a while back and the family dogs seem to have more energy, eat less, and poop less.

I think Eukanuba is an OK food…it’s better than what you’ll buy in a grocery store, but not nearly good enough for MY dogs. I wouldn’t feed it, but I would recommend it over Dog Chow and others like it. Iams used to be a decent food, but recent (a few years ago) changes in the formulation made it one of the lesser quality foods available. The company choose to increase profits by decreasing quality. A university study, feeding dogs the recommended amounts (according to directions on the Iams bag) had to be discontinued because the health of the dogs involved was at risk…this leads me to believe (and this is my OPINION) that the company: A) is misleading consumers into thinking that it’s inexpensive to feed by deliberately suggesting amounts too small for a dog to survive on and B) that the food does not contain adequate nutrition.
Take a look at this website http://iamscruelty.com/ before you decide whether you want to feed it. It will give you a good idea as to whether Eukanuba really cares about your pet’s health and well-being. I won’t do business with a company like this.

Eukanuba and Iams are some of the few decent foods you can buy from supermarkets. I wouldn’t take ANY notice of advice from people on here, especially nutrition advice – certainly don’t take it over a vet’s advice.

PLEASE ignore all the people who insist that you have to buy special dog food for your dogs! It’s a bunch of HOOEY.
This is the newest fad going on. I have shown Collies for over 30 yrs & for the last 20+ years I have fed them IAMS. I have always had happy healthy dogs who happen to look great & win quite often at the shows.
Whatever dog food works for you & your dog is just fine!!!
There is no reason to go & spend a bunch of money on the most expensive food or cook for your dog or give him raw food or whatever. Just give him whatever works for him.
